According to our red Reader's Handbook, a character is a person, animal, or an imaginary creature that takes part in the action of a story.  An author can develop a character by describing several aspects of the character:
  • how the character looks
  • how the character acts, feels, and talks
  • how others feel about the character
  • how the character interacts with others
  1. After reading the first quarter of the novel, choose one word to describe the main character of the story.
  2. Next, explain why you chose that word.  Use an aspect from the list above to help support your word choice.  See the example below.
  3. Finally, respond to a classmate's comment.  Agree or disagree with their word choice and explain why.

I chose the word 'caring' to describe Timothy from the novel, The Cay. I chose this word because of what he said to Phillip on the raft.  He said, "Put your 'ead back downg, young bahss, an' rest awhile longer.  Do not look direct at d'sun.  'Tis too powerful."
I agree with Sam's comment about Timothy being 'accepting.'  He shows this when he said"..but I true tink beneath d'skin is all d'same."

  1. I chose the word indepent for Miranda becuse she always goes up in their attic and whatches the two families in the dollhouse in differnent time periods. She wants to bring the dollhouse down until she relizes that there are little people that used to lived in the house that they just moved into inside of it! Then she decides to keep it a secret. Also she really doesn't go outside and play with the neighbors. That is why i chose the word indepent for Miranda.

  2. I chose the word "curious" for Miranda because, she is always up in the attic to look at the doll house. Even though it is scary she still wants to do it!! She wants to figure out what the two families are doing in the dollhouse and why she sees them. She was also curious about why her Aunt Belle was so scared about their house and why she wants them to move. That shows that she is curious about the dollhouse and wants to know more about it.

  3. I chose the words 'Independent' and 'Brave' because Miranda from the novel Time Windows keeps the dollhouse with the people a secret. But no matter how terrifying the attic and dollhouse is, she just keeps on going up there.

  8. i think that Miranda is very excited but freaked out. Excited because, she has a new house and her friend Nicole is coming to visit for a while and freaked out, because the doll house makes her scared , she can't breathe sometimes and their lives are just overwhelming for her. KyLea H.

  11. I'd describe Miranda as confused. I thinks she;s confused because she's not sure whats she"s seeing or what it means and why things are happening the way they are

  12. I would choose the word 'obsessed' for Miranda. I did this because, she is in the attic watching the doll house nonstop, even if she's horrified.

  17. I choose the word anxious for Miranda. I chose it because whenever there is the smell of magnolia her terror comes over her and she feels very anxious. She also is VERY anxious to find out what is going on with her house and dollhouse. I agree with Emily F. for inquiring and Erin D. for brave. Hanna M., 6th period

  18. I think the magnolia tree has an effct on the women in the house that Miranda lives in now. Because every women had an effect from the magnolia tree Mrs.lucinda and Iris Kaimer and miranda's mom (mither).

  20. We chose the word independent for Miranda.
We chose this because she likes to be by herself in the doll house, and she doesn't tell anybody. We agree with everybody. It is what she is like for every word.

  22. HI! I predict that Mrs. Wainwright knows more about what the magnolia smell means and she will help Miranda solve the mystery. Also I predict that the Hooton boys will find out about the dollhouse and will help her as well.I'm still curious about why the magnolia smell only has effected the moms/women?????? 23. I think that one word to describe miranda is
addicted becaus eshe won't stop spending time at the dollhouse she wouldn't even for her best friend from new york nicole. Also i think its a good point that Hollie L. from period 7 where she pointed out that in the book it says something's pulling her to the dollhouse so she seems really addicted.

  24. Miranda seems confused on all the weird things going on in her house. She feels like somthing is pulling her to it for a reason and she ignoresnicole for the dollhouse. i think she wants to figure out the mystery of the house and why these things are happening. But otherwise she is a moody teen that didn't want to move.

  25. I also chose the word, "predictable" for Miranda, because she always goes up to see the doll house. I agree with Jessica M. from 1st block. She IS addicted to the doll house because she won't quit looking into it.

  26. i still am not sure about who is the mainmain charicter some say it's Meranda but also some say it's Lucinda because the story mostly revolves around her and Meranda equally
    CONFUSING

  27. Miranda seems to be scared because her mither is sick and is acting weird. And the dollhouse seems to be calling her back to watch it.

  28. I choose the word obsessed for miranda because, a large portion of the book has miranda in the attic, watching the doll house, she never stops thinking about it either.

  29. i would describe miranda as 'curious' because she was always watching the dollhouse and wandering about the families that lived there before. miranda has black, thick, curly hair, and she is in 8th grade. i think that the author feels almost proud and frightful for miranda for 1:having those 'panick attacks' and 2: she still watches the dollhouse even though it is making her 'scared'. at first, miranda doesn't really interact with people, but when she's with her parents, she acts calm and laid back. i agree with jessica m. because she thought miranda was 'addicted' to the dollhouse. which is practically true.

  30. I would have to say that marianda is a very curies person in the book time windows she is not scard she is maybe just a little scarde and needs someone to be there for her so there would be the charecter named Dan.

  31. I chose the word anxious for Miranda because she is anxious to find out what's wrong with the dollhouse and i also agree with Jessica M. because at this point in the book Miranda is definatly OBSESSED with that dollhouse

  32. i chose brave, curious and obsessed. brave because no matter how hard it gets she always goes to visit the doll house and she will go up there even when her mother tells har not to go up there. curiouse because she has to know how the fire started, why there is water written on the doll house attic floor, and she has to know what is making her mother so cranky all the time. obsessed because she is ALWAYS in the attic looking into the doll house she never goes out to see her neighbors dan and buddy.

  33. I agree with a lot of the blogs although the ones who said curious and addicted really stuck out to me. I also enjoyed the blog about the author's feelings for Miranda. SINCE YOU DIDNT PUT YOUR NAME, I CAN'T SAY WHO WROTE IT!! But anyway I also agree with Jessica M. (Like a lot of people)with her post. Hanna M., 6th period (see I put my name:)

  35. I said that Miranda was independent. I chose thi word because Miranda doesn't want to tell anybody about the doll house and she is always up there even when she is scared or her parents tell her not to go up there. I agree with Elizabeth.

  36. i dont exactly think that she is scared i agree with the people who said that she is curious, because she is trying to figure out what is going on with the house and what is it. i noticed that whenever she smells magnolia that the bad things start to happen. i think that it is lucinda that is doing it cause she always smells like magnolia, although it could be something else cause mither is repeating what lucinda does so i think it has something also to do with the women that live in the house (mither, lucinda, and iris)
